Cyprus Cup : The Big Red Machine Breaks Down
Heading into today's match, all the Canadian Women's National Team needed was a draw against England to book yet another trip to the final of the Cyprus Cup. After two dominating performances earlier in the tournament against Finland & Italy (3:0 & 3:1 respectively), all seemed set for Big Red to roll to another final.
That's where it all started to go wrong.
England came out like the lions on their crest, putting Canada on it's heels with a goal in the opening minute by Lianne Sanderson (who would score the second goal at the 33rd minute). The match didn't get much better for the Canucks in spite of controlling possession, especially in the second half. England played an excellent defensive game, limiting Canada's attacking chances.
“We know at this level, the first goal is probably the most important feature. It gives you the upper hand in the tactics,” said Canada's Coach Herdman. “So England, from that point could drop a lower block and hit us on the counter, which is what they did. They showed tremendous pace today and, at times, our girls couldn’t cope with it.”
With the loss Canada now enters the 3rd place match against the Republic of Ireland on Wednesday. Not where they expected to be one year away from the Women's World Cup.
